Mesothelioma – Introducing The Oncologist

Being diagnosed with cancer is not a good day for anyone. Mesothelioma is a particularly bad form. Whether you are diagnosed with this or another version, you will undoubtedly be sent off to a medical specialist known as an oncologist.
Cancer treatment has come a long way. It wasn't that long ago that the "C" word was a death sentence and you were just unlucky if you were diagnosed with it. The interesting thing is the concept has expanded greatly as a health risk, but so has the ability to treat it. It is often suggested that we have found no cure to cancer, but that isn't really true. We have found ways to cure people who suffer from various cancers like Lance Armstrong, but we haven't found a universal cure.
The specialists who deal with all of this are known as oncologists. The title covers everyone from medical scientists who do research on the various forms of cancer to doctors who actually treat patients. If you are diagnosed with Mesothelioma, you are going to be referred to just such a specialist.
What should you look for in an oncologist? Well, there are a couple of things. First and foremost, you want someone who is board certified. The certification is a sign you are dealing with a person who is advanced in their understanding and competency in the field. Given the fact you are dealing with a very serious form of cancer, you don't want to be treated by anyone other than the best.
The second thing to look for is a bit more subtle. How would you feel if you dealt with cancer patients all day? You would lose far more patients than almost any other form of medical professional because cancer is an insidious disease. You would probably become a bit number and cynical after a while. There is nothing unprofessional about this. We are all human beings. Still, you really don't want a doctor who manifests this when you are a patient trying to fight Mesothelioma. You want a fighter and this is often why younger oncologists are an ideal choice. Generalities are dangerous, but they often can be more personally involved in the fight. A doctor who views your fight as their fight is ideal.
The diagnosis of Mesothelioma can be a harsh one. The shining night in your effort to fight the cancer will be an oncologist. Find one you are comfortable with and go to war!

Mesothelioma is an Aggressive Primary Neoplasm

Another interesting study is called, "Assessment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma with 18F-FDG Dual-Head Gamma-Camera Coincidence Imaging: Comparison with Histopathology" by Victor H. Gerbaudo, PhD, David J. Sugarbaker, MD, Scott Britz-Cunningham, MD, PhD, Marcelo F. Di Carli, MD1, Charles Mauceri1 and S. Ted Treves, MD -  Division of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Radiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts; 2 Division of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts - Journal of Nuclear Medicine Vol. 43 No. 9 1144-1149.  Here is an excerpt: "Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an aggressive primary neoplasm for which early detection and accurate staging are known diagnostic challenges. The role of 18F-FDG dual-head gamma-camera coincidence imaging (18F-FDG-CI) is yet to be defined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of 18F-FDG-CI in the assessment of malignant pleural mesothelioma using histopathology as the gold standard. Methods: Fifteen consecutive patients with CT scan evidence of pleural thickening, fluid, plaques, or calcification underwent 18F-FDG imaging 1.5 h after the intravenous administration of 370 MBq 18F-FDG. Imaging was performed with a dual-head gamma camera equipped with 2.54-cm-thick NaI crystals operating in coincidence mode. Using an iterative algorithm, whole-body images were reconstructed as transaxial, sagittal, and coronal images. No attenuation correction was applied. The results of 18F-FDG-CI scans were compared with CT and with histopathologic diagnosis. Results: Eleven of 15 patients had histologically proven malignant mesotheliomas (10 epithelial, 1 sarcomatoid). All 11 primary tumors were detected by 18F-FDG, and absence of disease was confirmed in the 4 patients who were disease free. Thirty-four lesions were biopsied; among these, 29 were found to be positive for tumor. 18F-FDG was true-positive in 28 lesions, true-negative in 4, false-negative in 1 (0.5 cm in diameter), and false-positive in 1 (inflammatory pleuritis). The smallest lesion detected was 0.8 cm. For biopsied lesions, overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for 18F-FDG-CI were 97%, 80%, and 94% respectively, compared with 83%, 80%, and 82% for CT. Twenty-one of 29 positive lesions involved the pleura, lung parenchyma, or chest wall and were all 18F-FDG avid. In the mediastinum, 18F-FDG-CI detected 7 of 8 biopsy-positive lesions (88%), whereas CT was positive in 6 of 8 lesions (75%). 18F-FDG identified extrathoracic metastases in 5 patients, excluding them from surgical therapy. Conclusion: These preliminary results suggest that 18F-FDG-CI appears to be an accurate method to diagnose and to define the extent of disease in patients with diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma."

How Many Treatments are Currently Being Used for Victims of Asbestos Diseases?

Mesothelioma is touted as deadly because most of the cases are diagnosed when in advanced stage and doctors have little solace to offer by then. Still doctors try to do their best to relieve the patients from severe pain of mesothelioma using advanced treatments.
Surgery
Before considering surgery as one of the propositions for the treatment of malignant cancer, the health of the patient needs to be carefully evaluated. The tests are performed to check whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body or not. Also evaluation of the patient’s lung and heart functions is done. In case of the former, a mesothelioma surgery cannot be performed. Both the heart and lungs need to be properly functioning state for surgery to take place.
Surgery is of two types: aggressive surgery (long-term control) and palliative procedures (relief of symptoms). Let’s define each of them separately.
Aggressive surgery
Aggressive surgery involves removal of the lung, the pleura, the diaphragm and the pericardium by a procedure, which is known as extra pleural pneumonectomy. The intention to follow this method is to physically remove as much of the tumor as possible. It is in fact adopting a bold method to do away with the disease—hence the name is “Aggressive surgery”.
This surgery is extremely complicated and involves high risk. This is because of the fact that there are possible chances of death due to the same within a month. Extra pleural pneumonectomy is therefore normally performed on younger patients who are in good health and are in a position to tolerate the surgery.
Palliative Procedures
Palliative procedures are normally performed when the cancer is in its advanced form. These procedures are performed to control the symptoms of mesothelioma rather than cure them. Pleurectomy (also decortications) is the process to surgically remove the pleura. This method reduces the pain caused by the cancerous mass and may also prevent the recurrence of pleural effusion (fluid collection which causes tremendous breathlessness). For patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma, complete surgical removal of the entire tumor is not entirely possible. In this case the surgery aims to extenuate the symptoms, such as ascites,
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the method in which drugs are used to treat mesothelioma. It has been observed that this method is partially succesfull. This is because the patient recovers partially after using drugs or combination of drugs (In fact the efficacy of this method increases, if combination of drugs are used at the same time.) Some of these combinations have proved successful and new drugs are being developed for the treatment of this cancer.

Radiation Therapy
In this method the tumor is killed by using radiation doses. However, with the help of this procedure, killing the tumor cells is quite difficult. This is because of the fact that it is difficult to specifically locate the malignant cells. Also the heart, lungs and other organs may surround the same, and they are at the risk of getting damaged by the radiation dosage. However lower doses of radiation can be used to reduce the disease to a certain extent.
Dual Therapy
Both chemotherapy and radiation are used in conjunction after the performance of the surgery. They both help in killing any remaining tumor cells that were not removed by surgery and may also help in relieving symptoms of the disease like chest pain.
The treatment methods, which are described above, are direct ways of treating a person suffering from mesothelioma. However doctors and researchers are always on the lookout for new ways to treat mesothelioma. The necessity for the evolution of alternative ways to treat patients suffering from mesothelioma arises because of the complex nature of different types of cancers, and because patients respond differently to various types of medical care.
Some of them are as follows:
Immunoagumentive Therapy (IAT)
The goal of IAT is to strengthen the body's own immune system. The same is done by balancing four different proteins found in the blood.
Intraoperative Photodynamic Therapy (IPT)
This method of treatment is being used to cure early stages of mesothelioma in the chest. IPT uses special drugs and light to kill cancer cells during surgery. A drug that makes tumor cells more sensitive to light is injected into a vein several days before surgery. During surgery, a special light is used to locate the cancer.

Mesothelioma Cancer -A simple Overview

Mesothelioma, often referred to as "asbestos cancer", is a cancer of the mesothelium, the tissue that lines and protects the internal organs of the body. A diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (often simply called mesothelioma) is very serious. Most cases pass away within one to two years after receiving the diagnosis, although recent improvements in treatment (both chemotherapy and surgical treatment) have prolonged the survival times of many mesothelioma patients. Early diagnosis and proper treatment of mesothelioma can often lead to a good prognosis.
Three main types of mesothelioma:
• Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lung;
• Peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the abdominal cavity
• Pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the heart
The most common form is pleural mesothelioma, followed by peritoneal mesothelioma. Pericardial mesothelioma is exceptionally rare. The main known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers, a mineral commonly used in insulating and fire retardant materials. Asbestos was widely used in manufacturing and construction until 1972, when it was partially banned. However, asbestos continued to be used in many household products into the late 1970's, and in automotive brakes into the 1990's.
Mesothelioma can also occur after brief contacts with asbestos this is usually the case of relatives of workers in asbestos factories who came down with the disease through minimal exposure to asbestos in the working clothes of the workers. It often takes several decades for symptoms of the disease to show up.
Mesothelioma Diagnosis, Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma Symptoms Nearly 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the United State
Symptoms:
• Difficulty in breathing • chronic cough • chest and back pain • weight loss
Asbestos is commoner in men aged 50 years and above, though nearly anyone who has been exposed to asbestos can contract the disease. Mesothelioma is most common in industrial and construction workers, but can also result from household exposures. Many cases of mesothelioma have occurred in the children or wives of industrial workers, who have been exposed to asbestos fibers brought home on the clothing of the worker.
The only known cause of Mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers. If you have been diagnosed with any form of the disease, you should seek the services of a Mesothelioma attorney for legal advice. Swift Detection Can Lead To Positive Outcome When detected early enough, and treated promptly by an experienced oncologist{medical doctor who has specialized in the treatment of cancers}, the patient's prognosis is expected to be good. Early detection of this cancer and all forms cancer related to asbestos exposure is vital.

How Come Absestos Is Killing Amercans Today

We all heard of Absestos and the horrible consequences it has in our health.  Asbestosis is "a form of lung disease (pneumoconiosis)" which causes interstitial fibrosis or scarring of the lungs.
Asbestosis is progressive and, for the most part, irreversible. Respiratory impairment worsens with time, even if exposure to asbestos has ceased. Asbestosis is usually found in asbestos workers and not in the general public. People with asbestosis have shortness of breath, often along with a cough. Asbestos cretes Mesothelioma, and Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which affects mesothelial tissue in the lungs, peritoneum or pericardium.
The biggest concern mesothelioma is that  can arise both from visceral and parietal peritoneum. It is diagnosed in advanced stages in most cases, and it often takes considerable time to arrive at the correct diagnosis, as the mean symptoms-to-diagnosis time reported is 122 days. The most frequently reported initial symptoms are abdominal pain (35), anorexia, marked weight loss, and ascites ; less frequently night sweats and hypercoagulability. Clinical presentation with fever of unknown origin, intestinal obstruction, or surgical emergency (due to acute inflammatory lesions) have been reported. Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Mesothelioma treatment if mesothelioma attorneys texas.
Mesothelioma is defined as an ICD-O histology code of 9050-9053. Data are presented for a five-year time period. Mesothelioma cell viability was decreased in a dose-dependent manner by lovastatin (5 to 30 microM). These effects were not reversed by exogenous growth factors or cholesterol, but were reversed by addition of doses of  micro mevalonate, confirming that lovastatin affected mesothelioma viability by inhibiting mevalonate synthesis. This is based on the fact that  Mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin lining surrounding the lung and this disease is almost always fatal, often within a few months of diagnosis.
The scary part about this ilness, is that mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer (40 years versus 15-20 years), and mesothelioma is therefore likely to be found among workers who were first exposed to asbestos at an early age. Mesothelioma is always fatal. Mesothelioma has also been found in individuals who were exposed to asbestos only once decades earlier. The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos. Mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer (40 years versus 15-20 years), and mesothelioma is therefore more likely to be found among workers who were first exposed to asbestos at an early age. Mesothelioma is always fatal.
Exposure to asbestos has also been associated with an increased incidence of esophageal, kidney, laryngeal, pharyngeal, and buccal cavity cancers. As with other known chronic occupational diseases, disease associated with asbestos generally appears about twenty years following the first occurrence of exposure: There are no known acute effects associated with exposure to asbestos. Exposure to ozone for several hours at relatively low concentrations has been found to significantly reduce lung function and induce respiratory inflammation in normal, healthy people during exercise. This decrease in lung function generally is accompanied by symptoms including chest pain, coughing, sneezing, and pulmonary congestion. Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a significant cause of lung cancers in people who themselves do not use tobacco. Between 3000 and 6000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States are caused by exposure to ETS.

Options To Improve Mesothelioma Life Expectancy

The body is not able to fight asbestos inhalation or ingestion because of the nature of the asbestos dust and its fibers. The extent of internal damage strongly depends on when the diagnosis is made (at which phase) and the available and affordable treatment of mesothelioma. The chances of a better life expectancy are possible if the diagnosis is made early. The tumors spread throughout the body when a late diagnosis is made and then there is no alternative but to go in for pain relief treatment which is also one of the main treatment options.
Malignant mesothelioma is caused due to constant exposure to asbestos contained materials. The affected person may display obscure health problems once affected. With the advancement of the disease, the treatment becomes very difficult and life expectancy gets shortened. To improve mesothelioma life expectancy, early diagnosis and treatment becomes indispensable.
Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy is one form of treatment for improving mesothelioma life expectancy. Two or more drugs may be administered at the same time. Cancer cells get destroyed in chemo treatment. Chemotherapy is also used to help shrink a tumor and also destroy cancer cells that almost always remain after surgery. It also helps subsequent immunotherapy and radiation to work better. Sometimes surgery is not an option and if the cancer cells have spread from the original tumor to the rest of the body, chemotherapy is the only way out. However, there are various discomforting side effects of chemotherapy.
Radiation therapy:
Radiation is another treatment to improve mesothelioma life expectancy and is given in a very high dose. It destroys tumors and reduces the spread of malignant mesothelioma. Several types of radiation are used in different ways to help in the treatment of the cancer. Radiation is also used for pain relief while treating other cancers, but not without its side effects.
Surgery and other therapies:
Parts of the body which are cancerous due to malignant mesothelioma have to be removed through surgery. The limitations and implications of surgery also depend upon where the cancer is primarily present. Along with the other treatment options, surgery is popularly used in conjunction. Before the cancer spreads throughout the body, surgery may be an effective option.
There are a number of therapies adopted in the research and trial stages. Immunotherapy is being investigated, where the immune system of the body is stimulated to fight back. The cancer vaccine is the main support of the active immunotherapy procedure. Passive immunotherapy involves the administration of immune system components outside of the body.
Another important development at the research stage is gene therapy. Mesothelioma causes a lot of damage to the DNA and this only complicates the methods of finding specific genes hat could actually help in tracking and killing the mesothelioma cancer cells. Nevertheless, research is on and it does show some promise.
Photosensitizing drugs are administered into the body intravenously in the photodynamic treatment option. To treat the cancerous cells, a fixed frequency light is used and the drugs are targeted at the cancerous cells. There are certain side effects to this treatment too.

Practice of Mesothelioma Surgeons

Even though there no cure is for mesothelioma, scientists have developed various treatment methods to help reduce the suffering associated with the disease, surgery being the most common method utilized. Mesothelioma specialists may recommend surgery to remove the main mesothelioma tumor and nearby tissues taken over by these cancerous cells. However, if the mesothelioma is at its advanced stage, then mesothelioma surgery may prove difficult, as the tumor is likely to have spread to other areas.

Practical Ways by Which You Can Be of Help to Your Mesothelioma Friend

Your friend that has come down with mesothelioma cancer may find it hard to ask for help or to appear vulnerable. Do not tell the person to "be brave" or to "be strong",when people do this to cancer victims they are only putting them under a lot of unnecessary pressure on them to act strong even when they do not feel up to it.

Families can put subtle pressure on people with cancer by expecting or needing them to be strong all the time. In that case, you might play an important role for a friend who has cancer. He or she may know you well and trust you enough to confide in you, yet you don't have the emotional attachment and expectations of a family member. This kind of relationship can be a great gift for a person facing cancer.

Our basic human nature makes us want to distance ourselves from people that become seriously ill. When someone close to us develops mesothelioma cancer we are forced to confront our own fears about illness, weakness, or death. This may make us reluctant to interact with the affected person. But isolation can be a problem for people with cancer. Make an extra effort to reach out.

These are some of the ways by which you can help the mesothelioma cancer victim:

1- If your friend needs medical equipment or money for treatment, you can look into getting something donated or organize a raffle to help raise money. Or you can simply take up a collection to buy something that might not be covered by insurance.

2- The person with cancer may look to you for advice regarding financial worries, work issues, or other concerns. Be honest. Help if you can, but if you feel uncomfortable, say so. There are many places a person can get help and support, and you might suggest seeking the advice of a professional who is best suited to give that kind of guidance.

3- Keep your communication lines with the victim as open and free as possible. Continue to treat your friend as normally as possible, and talk about how the person is managing and what they need. But don't feel that you always have to talk about cancer. Include them in activities and social events. If they aren't up to doing something, let them be the one to decide to say no. Keep inviting them unless they tell you otherwise.

4- Ask what they could use; let them tell you what would be most helpful. Offer to help in specific ways.

5- Send or prepare a meal. Arrange a schedule of meal delivery.

6- Offer to help with child care. Arrange a schedule of day care pick-ups.

7- Offer a ride to and from treatment appointments.

8- Help run errands.

9- Offer to take phone calls if your friend is feeling tired and needs to rest.

10- Coordinate visits by groups, or coordinate sending cards, flowers, or gifts.

11- Honor your friend by making contributions to related charities, organizing blood drives, or making special efforts in his or her name.

12- Offer to do some research on their unanswered questions about cancer, or refer them to the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

13- You can plan a party for your friend upon the completion of his/her therapy. However make sure you check with the victim before you make your party plans, show him/her the list of those invited.

New Viral Therapy Examined to Destroy Mesothelioma Most cancers Cells

A new examine in the treatment method of malignant pleural mesothelioma has led to a genetically-engineered virus that may possibly support to deal with the most cancers.
Researchers from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Most cancers Center and Mount Sinai College of Medicine in New York and the Healthcare College of Vienna in Austria have arrive together to test a genetically-modified virus and its effects on mesothelioma clients.
The virus, regarded as the Newcastle disorder virus (NDV), has the energy to invade cancer tissue and throughout testing, was in a position to set off remission of mesothelioma tumors.
When the virus is injected into the pleural cavity of the lung, during a procedure named oncolytic viral therapy, the mesothelioma cells become infected with it, leading to the cancerous tissue to die.
The researchers found that sixty five percent of the laboratory wildlife examined experienced a complete response to the process following 14 days of remedy and obtained extended-time period survival following 50 days and nights of treatment solution.
The subjects that obtained far more than an individual dose of the virus experienced superior responses than those with only an individual dose. The animals that did not obtain the virus died in 23 times or less.
The research could lead to a potential remedy that may possibly quit the development of the most cancers in mesothelioma clients.
At this time, there is no treatment for mesothelioma, so if you or a liked a single have the most cancers or have been uncovered to asbestos, make contact with a squad of mesothelioma lawyers for aid in fighting for your positive aspects.
You could possibly be entitled to acquire a huge compensation for your pain and losses, so hire a top rated staff of mesothelioma lawyers to symbolize you right now.

Mesothelioma blight can now be detected earlier

U.S. researchers find specific changes in the blood of patients suffering from two types of fatal cancers are pancreatic cancer and mesothelioma cancer. This allows the physician to diagnose cancer at earlier stages.
By using scanning technology developed by Somalogic Inc., the company researchers say they can detect early signs of pancreatic cancer and one type of lung cancer called mesothelioma in people who are diagnosed but not receiving treatment for the disease. "At this time the cancer is detected at an advanced stage, when the possibility of treatment has been minimal," said Rachel Ostroff, director of clinical research on Somalogic Inc., who presented the findings at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Denver recently.
Pancreatic cancer usually strikes without symptoms and only recently recognized at an advanced stage. The National Cancer Institute says pancreatic cancer is rarely curable. If the cancer is still in the pancreas (localized), cure rates will be higher. Even so, it is usually best wishes in all cases only slightly less than 20 percent.
For patients with cancer that is still smaller than 2 cm, with no spread to lymph nodes, cancer surgery can save patients up to five years at least. This possibility could reach 18-24 percent.
The pancreas is an organ shaped like a tube sponges length approximately 6 inches, which is found behind the stomach. The pancreas produces enzymes and hormones, including insulin. Pancreatic enzymes help digest food in the small intestine, whereas insulin to control blood sugar levels. Both enzymes and hormones necessary for maintaining the body to work properly.
Men have twice as likely to attack this disease. Pancreatic cancer is more common in smokers than nonsmokers. People suffering from chronic pancreatic disease and those who are likely to suffer from long-standing diabetes (especially women) have a greater risk.
Meanwhile, mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is often caused by malignant cells that develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the organs. The most common is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but may also occur in the pericardium, or lining vaginalis.
Most of the people affected by mesothelioma caused by frequent exposure to asbestos particles. Washing clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can also be at risk of developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, and no association between mesothelioma and smoking.
Symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural fluid (fluid between the lung and the chest wall) or chest wall pain, and also because of excess weight. "This aggressive cancer detection at earlier stages will identify patients for early treatment, which may improve their quality of life and a chance to recover," he said.
Pancreatic cancer is relatively rare, but it is the fourth largest cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States (U.S.). While mesothelioma, caused by asbestos, killed around 15 thousand to 20 thousand people per year worldwide.
In October, NEC Corp. of Japan to invest U.S. $ 5 million as part of a strategic partnership with Somalogic, based in Colorado to develop technology aimed at detecting the disease by testing the protein in a drop of blood. Somalogic test depends on aptamers - a series of genetic material that is bound to proteins. Somalogic have improved technology that makes the molecule more likely to fixate on particular proteins.
For the study, researchers tested the blood sample firms patients suffering from two types of cancer, and those who joined in the control group who have a condition with symptoms similar to pancreatitis and cancers such as lung fibrosis. The team used computer models to find significant differences in biology, or biological markers that distinguish blood samples from cancer patients with those who do not have cancer.
For both cancers, the team found a biological marker that has high accuracy in detecting any type of cancer, said Ostroff. They are also very specific, in the sense that they are able to properly remove the people who do not suffer from the cancer. Now biomarkers that need to be confirmed by other studies to ensure that the results are accurate and can be reproduced in diagnostic tests. "It's easy to find biomarkers," Ostroff said at the meeting. "It's hard to do validation on them."
Ostroff said his team will observe a number of factors that can trigger false positive results, such as how long a sample should be placed on the shelf before being tested. "We examined these parameters to ensure that we observe biomarkers of disease," he said.

Mesothelioma and Chromosomal Abberrations

One interesting study is called, "Specificity of asbestos-induced chromosomal aberrations in short-term cultured human mesothelial cells" -  Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics Volume 41, Issue 1, August 1989, Pages 33-39 by Kenth Olofssona and Joachim Mark, a Department of Pathology and Cytogenetics, Central Hospital, Skövde, Sweden.  Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - Short-term cultured normal human mesothelial cells were exposed for 48 hours to three different asbestos compounds, crocidiolite, chrysotile, and amosite. In the concentration used (0.01 mg/ml) all three asbestiform minerals caused, within a few days, a significant increase of cells showing numerical and/or structural abnormalities. The abnormalities were analyzed in detail using banding techniques. The results were compared with the cytogenetic observations in 52 published cases of mesotheliomas. This comparison revealed only a few similarities as regards numerical deviations. The structural rearrangements in asbestos-exposed cultures, however, in many instances involved chromosome types and chromosome regions preferentially affected in mesotheliomas."

Mesothelioma Prognosis: Knowing Your Chances

Some mesothelioma patients want to know about mesothelioma prognosis. They may have their own personal valid reasons for wanting to know their chances of survival or getting better. If you are a mesothelioma patient interested in the same thing, then you have the right to know. Do keep in mind though that there are various prognosis sources. Here are some important points you should consider when reading about asbestos cancer prognosis.

Prognosis Data

Where it Comes From - The first thing you should understand is where prognosis data comes from. Real prognosis information is based form statistical data. Researchers look into different mesothelioma cases through clinical studies to get average figures. This may mean that genuine prognosis information may be true for a large number of patients. This does not mean though that the information is always true.

Asbestos cancer cases can be unique. This is because a lot of different factors can affect mesothelioma. Some of these include your overall health, treatments taken, time when treatment began, mesothelioma type and severity of the condition. It is therefore important not to view prognosis information as absolutely true in your case.

Difficulties with Prognosis

It may be difficult to arrive at statistical or personal mesothelioma prognosis. This is because mesothelioma itself is not like many other forms of cancer. The condition is rare. Asbestos exposure, which is the primary risk factor linked to this condition is not always experienced by a lot of people. Those who also have the condition may not immediately seek doctors' assistance for diagnosis and treatment. The symptoms do not obviously point to the condition and may even mimic the symptoms of other diseases.

Statistical Information

So what do the statistical figures say? Since patients are often diagnosed late, the prognosis for many patients is not good. A lot of patients are told that they can expect to live for only less than a year. Again, there are exceptions to this prognosis. There have been personal accounts of patients who have survived for more than five years. Some even live up to ten years after diagnosis.

Diagnosis

Like other forms of cancer, early mesothelioma diagnosis is important. Early diagnosis means early treatment and higher chances of survival. Since early diagnosis is not often made due to the lack of unique symptoms, you may not even think that a doctor's visit is necessary. Your only clue that may suggest that you may need medical monitoring is asbestos exposure. This is only true however for individuals who work closely with asbestos. Patients who do not handle asbestos on a regular basis may not even remember or know that they have been exposed to asbestos.

Treatment

Treatment is one factor that can affect individual prognosis. Depending on your overall health, the stage of your disease and your doctor's evaluation, you may have to undergo one or two cancer treatment methods. Like other forms of cancer, mesothelioma may be treated through chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy.

Mesothelioma prognosis is definitely never definite. Although prognosis information can provide you with valuable insight about the disease, there is no reason to believe that you absolutely have no hope of surviving beyond a year.

Asbestos, because of its resistance to heat, electrical and chemical damage, sound absorption and tensile strength, became common in numerous manufactured products and building materials. Unfortunately, this has affected a number of industries which show a high risk for mesothelioma, asbestosis, and other cancers including lung, esophageal, gastrointestinal, laryngeal, and pharyngeal.

Asbestos Abatement Procedures Outdoors 1980 US Navy

Asbestos abatement is the removal, encapsulation or enclosure of asbestos to reduce or eliminate airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers or amounts of asbestos containing material (ACM). The proper removal of asbestos is regulated by many agencies in the US, including OSHA and EPA and includes requirements for engineering controls, work practices, personal protective equipment, exposure assessment, medical surveillance, and training. With few exceptions, the use of HEPA vacuum cleaners, wet methods, prompt clean up and disposal of debris in leak-tight containers are required for all asbestos removal operations. Contrary to popular belief, the US has not banned asbestos. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated that at least 10000 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Asbestos exposure is linked to asbestosis, lung & gastrointestinal cancers, and an aggressive cancer called mesothelioma. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause permanent and irreversible damage to vital organs. Disease occurs 10 -- 50 years after exposure. Between 1900 and the mid 1980s, asbestos was used in over 3000 different products. During the 20th century, more than 30 million tons of asbestos were used in industrial facilities, homes, schools, shipyards, steel mills, power plants and commercial buildings in the United States. For current information on asbestos, the hazards of exposure and to learn how you can help prevent asbestos-related disease, link to and ...

ESMO 2010: The ICON7 trial

Prof Timothy Perren explains the results of the ICON7 trial investigating the use of bevacizumab to treat advanced ovarian cancer. This trial compared standard chemotherapy of carboplatin and paclitaxel with a treatment programme of carboplatin, paclitaxel and bevacizumab. Disease progression was found to be delayed and occurred less frequently in the bevacizumab group. Prof Perren discusses how representative the patient population was, considers the effect of residual disease status and outlines some of the side effects. The number of patients being treated with upfront chemotherapy in place of surgery has recently been increasing; Prof Perren talks about the difficulties that will need to be overcome in any trial investigating the addition of bevacizumab to upfront chemotherapy. Gastrointestinal Cancer

Gastrointestinal Cancer www.mesorc.com Although asbestos exposure is most commonly associated with mesothelioma, asbestosis, and other respiratory diseases, asbestos is a cancer-causing substance that can affect almost any part of the body. Asbestos-related gastrointestinal disease, while rare, is a serious concern for anyone who has been exposed to asbestos. About the Gastrointestinal System From the moment you take a bite of food, your body goes to work, digesting and converting the food into the nutrients and energy that sustain life. This process takes place in the gastrointestinal (digestive) system, a long, twisting route that extends from the mouth to the anus. The gastrointestinal route includes not only the esophagus, stomach and intestines, but also the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, which produce the juices that aid in digestion. How Asbestos Affects the Gastrointestinal System Studies have established a strong link between asbestos exposure and cancers of the stomach, esophagus and colon. What is less clear, however, is exactly how asbestos enters the digestive system. Some researchers believe that inhaled asbestos migrates from the lungs to other parts of the body. Others suggest that asbestos fibers may be coughed up and swallowed, landing in the lining of the gastrointestinal system. But no matter how they get there, when asbestos fibers wind up in the lining of the digestive tract, their effect can be just as deadly as asbestos fibers that settle in the ...

Hospice Care www.mesorc.com For more than 35 years, the growth of the hospice movement in the US has shaped new ways of thinking about death, dying and bereavement. It has also provided an alternative for care of patients who are in the final stages of a terminal illness like mesothelioma. Hospice is not a place, but rather a unique philosophy of care that focuses on quality of life rather than length of life. When all treatment options have been exhausted and there is no hope for a cure, a hospice program for mesothelioma can provide a patient with something called palliative care. The main goal of palliative care is to improve the patient's well-being by easing pain and resolving psychological problems. With mesothelioma hospice care, professional staff and volunteers are available around the clock to ease the patient's transition through the final stages of life. Hospice programs use a multi-dimensional approach which may include any or all of the following services: • Pain and symptom control. • Spiritual care. • Home care or inpatient care. • Respite care. • Bereavement care.

Types of Mesothelioma

About Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a disease known to usually affect people who have a high exposure to asbestos. It is a form of a tumour that affects the stomach and the other abdominal parts of the body ,especially the mesothelial cells that are present in an organ. The treatment of this disease depends on early diagnosis and the stage in which the patient is at present. Accordingly suitable treatments may be suggested ranging from surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Types of Mesothelioma

There are mainly three types of Mesothelioma that can affect the human body namely ,Pleural

Mesothelioma, Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Pericardial Mesothelioma.

Pleural Mesothelioma

It is the most common type which occurs at a high rate. It results in the mesothelial cells dividing abnormally and spreads malignancy to the surrounding areas resulting in complications of the other organs present in the body.In case the Pleural Mesothelioma is not cancerous and malignant it can be removed surgically and is less risky. Whereas in case it turns out to be malignant it becomes very serious and tends to shorten the life expectancy of the patient.

In such cases there is a accumulation of fluid caused due to the tumour in the pleura. As the

pleura starts thickening it reduces the capacity of the lungs and does not enable proper

breathing. As a result of this a patient suffering from Pleural Mesothelioma finds it difficult to

breathe normally. Once the tumour starts spreading outwardly to the chest walls and the ribs,

the patient also experiences chest pains.

Apart from these he also exhibits some common symptoms like cough, fever ,tiredness, unexplained weight loss with loss of appetite. Treatment of Pleural Mesothelioma is slightly complicated and difficult to achieve compared to the other types.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

It is the second most common type of Mesothelioma found in humans. It occurs usually when the patient is exposed to asbestos and known to affect the peritoneum membrane. Patients suffering from this type of tumour exhibit most of the similar symptoms like those suffering from Pleural Mesothelioma. The symptoms are characterised by abdominal pain and swelling along with fever, loss of weight resulting in fluid accumulation developing around the peritoneum.

The presence of Peritoneal Mesothelioma can be confirmed by conducting a biopsy though X-rays and CT scans can prove to be useful in initial diagnosis. Further a microscopic analysis is done using specialised stains. Treatment may be provided at this stage of diagnosis using a combination of chemotherapy, radio therapy or any other surgical intervention to reduce the extent of the spread of this tumour.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

This type of Mesothelioma is the least common amongst all the types of Mesothelioma affecting humans. As the name suggests it causes tumour in the pericardial membrane which forms a lining to the heart The symptoms are accompanied by chest pain ,chronic cough and a fluid accumulation around the heart, palipitations along with similar symptoms as exhibited in other types of Mesothelioma.

Compared to other types of Mesothelioma it is less life threatning provided it is diagnosed on time with proper surgical intervention.

Treatments generally used for Mesothelioma

- Chemotherapy

- Radiation therapy

- Surgery

Some of the new treatments used in treating Mesothelioma

- Gene Therapy.

- Immunotherapy.

- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy ( IMRT)

- Non-chemotherapy drugs like Veglin and Avastin .

Mesothelioma is a serious and a life-threatning disease and an early diagnosis can prevent further complication that can harm the patients. Advanced medical studies are been conducted to find a better solution in curing this dreadful disease. New drugs are been tested and developed and maybe in the years to come by hopefully an effective treatment should emerge in curing Mesothelioma successfully.
